Japan’s Red Brick Buildings

On my recent visit to Aichi prefecture, I visited the Handa red brick building. The former production site of Kabuto beer, the building dating back to 1898 is now designated as a nationally registered Tangible Cultural Property.　2018年10月に愛知県へ行ってきた時、半田赤レンガ建物を訪ねました。 半田赤レンガ建物は、明治31年（1898年）にカブトビールの製造工場として誕生しました。現在、全国的に登録された有形文化財に指定されています。As a child back in England, I lived in a red brick terrace house, so for me, seeing buildings made of the same material conjures up warm feelings of home. 子供の頃、私はイギリスで赤レンガの家に住んでいました。だから、 同じ素材で作られた建物を見ると、家庭の暖かい気持ちを思い起こされます。On a visit to Hokkaido a few years ago, I remember being impressed in the same way by the former Hokkaido Government Office in Sapporo. 数年前、北海道の札幌市にある旧北海道庁を見た時、同じように感銘を受けたことを覚えています。And, of course, here in Osaka, I never fail to be amazed by the majestic Osaka City Central Public Hall. そして、もちろん私は住んでいる大阪では、美しい大阪市中央公会堂を見るたびに感動します。Along with Tokyo’s main station and the red brick warehouse in Yokohama, each of these red brick buildings has been preserved, renovated and transformed into a major attraction for both foreign and domestic visitors. 東京駅と横浜の赤レンガ倉庫に加えて、これらの赤レンガの建物はそれぞれ保存され、改装され、海外から来られた方々と国内の観光客の両方にとって主要な観光スポットに変身されました。As I sipped a beer at the restaurant in the Handa building and enjoyed the ‘German festival’ that was being held that weekend, I started wondering about how these amazing buildings, that would fit right into any western town, came to exist in the first place.　半田赤レンガ建物を訪ねたとき、「ドイツ祭り」と言うイベントが行われていました。美味しいカブトビールを飲みながら、私はこれらの驚くべき建物が最初に存在するようになったことに疑問を持ち始めました。
