I have been teaching English in Japan for over 25 years now and although self-introductions are a popular first lesson for many courses, I tend to stay away from them. 私は２５年以上も日本に在住しており、英語教師として長いキャリアを持っています。毎年新しい生徒さんとの出会いがありますが、最初のレッスンではどうしても’自己紹介’を教材に取り入れるのが苦手です。When you’re nervous and accepting a new language into your life, talking about yourself can be the last thing on your mind.なぜならば、緊張している時や慣れていない言葉でしゃべている時、落ち着いて自分の話をするのは大変でしょう。 I find that sticking to neutral, less personal topics in the first few hours together can help the student adjust better and make them more likely to open up once they are feeling comfortable in a group.私の場合、最初にどんな方でも気楽にレッスンに参加が出来るようにわざと個人的な話を避ける。そうするとレッスンや一緒に勉強している仲間に慣れ、自分のペースや好きなタイミングで自分から自分の事を話し出すようになります。Japanese students, especially, can be shy or, at the very least modest about their achievements.特に日本人の生徒さんは自分の話をするのは恥ずかしいですし、素晴らしい才能を持っても、控えめです。 Often, somewhere down the line I find out the most interesting things about people I have been teaching for years. 数年が経ってから生徒さんについて魅力的な発見がある場合もあります。In the meantime, I pick up bits and pieces of information about each person as I get to know them and try to build my lessons around it. とかくするうち、少しずつ一人ひとりの生徒さんを知るようになり、それぞれの興味や個性に合わせて、学習教材を用意します。
