I have to admit that whenever Japan has a long bank holiday, I tend to stay at home to avoid the crowds. 正直言って、日本では連休を過ごすときはいつも、私は混雑を避けるために家にいる傾向があります。However, this year has been a busy one so far and I was desperate for a bit of ‘forest bathing’. しかし、今年はこれまで忙しい一年であり、少し「森林浴」を必要としていました。With the long Golden Week approaching, my friend and marketing coach, Jacqui, suggested that we head off to Gifu Prefecture to explore the ‘Nakasendo’, the mountain path that linked Edo (now known as Tokyo) and Kyoto, and I readily accepted the invitation. ゴールデンウィークが近づくにつれて、私の友人とマーケティングコーチのJacquiは、江戸（現在は東京）と京都を結ぶ山道である「なかせんど」を探索するために岐阜県に向かうことを提案しました。喜んで、その招待を受け入れました。We spent three fantastic days walking, relaxing, breathing in the fresh air and discussing our plans for the rest of the business year. 私たちは3日間の素晴らしい日々を過ごし、リラックスし、新鮮な空気を吸い、そして残りの事業年度の計画について話し合いました。
Day1:

After spending a night at the Nagoya Castle hotel, where we enjoyed fine views of the castle and a pretty scrumptious breakfast, we set off early for our destination. 名古屋城の素晴らしい景色と美味しい朝食を楽しめるNagoya Castle Hotelで一夜を過ごした後、私たちは目的地へ早めに出発しました。
We took the JR line to Ena, a journey of just over an hour from Nagoya by regular express train. No reservations or extra fares are needed. 私たちは名古屋から恵那市までJR線を乗り、普通の急行電車で1時間強の旅をしました。予約や追加料金は必要ありません。At Ena station, we called in at the Information Centre and spent a pleasant half hour discussing our plans with the very helpful clerk who was on duty. 恵那駅で、観光案内所に寄って、勤務中のとても親切な店員さんと私たちの計画について話し合う楽しい30分間を過ごしました。After picking up our rent-a-car, we parked up in the town and went for a wander along the Ena section of the Nakasendo. レンタカーを借りた後、私たちは町に駐車し、中山堂の恵那地区を散策しました。Compared to Magome and Tsumago, the walking route that takes you through the town of Ena is, at first glance, quite low key, much less touristy. 馬籠宿と妻籠宿と比較して、恵那市を通るルートは、一見したところ、非常に控えめで、観光客が少ないです。However, gold pebbles inlaid into the tarmac lead you quite clearly along the original path. しかし、駐機場に埋め込まれた金の小石は元の道を示して、とても分かり作案内されています。A 10-minute walk from the station will take you to the ruins of Oi-juku Honjin (the town’s old stronghold). 駅から徒歩10分で、大井宿本陣の廃墟に行くことができます。Oi-juku, is the 46th post station from Tokyo. 大井宿は中山道の46番目の宿です。In 1834, there would have been around 41 guest houses for travelers and 6 of those still remain. 1834年には、旅行者用のゲストハウスが約41軒あり、そのうち6軒がまだ残っています。
We were told that it is still possible to eat lunch at one of the guest houses, but when it came to lunchtime, we opted for coffee and sandwiches at a small coffee shop that we came across on our walk. そのゲストハウスの中で昼食を食べることはまだ可能な場所があるそうですが、私たちは散歩中に出くわした小さなコーヒーショップでコーヒーとサンドイッチを頂くことにしました。 It turned out to be a great choice as the master and his wife were very gracious with their hospitality. 店を経営していた夫婦はとても親切でした。If you are ever in the town of Ena, look out for the Zi:Zo coffee house, where the Jizo (the figure of the Buddha as a monk and protector of children and traveler) statue outside gets a fresh cup of coffee every day. 恵那市に行っくことがあるならば、Zi：Zoコーヒーハウスをぜひ探し見てください。店の外にある地蔵像が毎日新鮮なコーヒーを手に入れるそうです。The coffee shop is entirely non-smoking and the sandwiches are freshly made and piping hot. 喫茶店は完全に禁煙であり、ホットサンドウィッチは作りたてでとても美味しいです。
Ena has many attractions that can be accessed via the local one-car Akechi railway. 恵那市には地元の明知鉄道でアクセスできる多くの観光スポットがあります。However, after lunch, we hopped back into our car and headed off to take in the views of the Ena Gorge and Oi dam. しかし、昼食後、私たちは車に戻り、恵那峡谷と大井ダムの景色を少し離れたところから眺めるために出発しました。Instead of taking a leisurely cruise on the dam, I tested my courage by walking back over a road bridge, high above the River Kiso, to take some stunning photographs from up above. ゆっくりと船でダムを巡るのではなく、木曽川の上の道路橋を渡って上から写真を撮りました。私は高所恐怖症があるので、橋の上を歩くには少し勇気が必要でした！
Our next and final stop for the day was a visit to the Naegi Castle ruins close to the town of Nakatsugawa. その日の最後の目的地は中津川市の近くにある苗木城跡でした。Quoting directly from the English pamphlet that we picked up: ‘Naegi castle was a rock castle constructed on Mt. Takamori, 4.32 meters above sea level. Built 400 years ago, it was the residence of the Toyama family for 260 years. The castle was demolished in 1871, though in the ruins we can still see the stone wall and its impressively huge natural rocks. The castle tower observatory on top of Mt. Takamori offers a beautiful view of the Kiso river below’. 英語のパンフレットから直接引用して：「苗木城は高森山（海抜4.32メートル）に建てられた岩城です。 400年前に建てられた、260年間富山家の住居でした。城は1871年に取り壊されましたが、遺跡の中にはまだ石の壁とその印象的に巨大な天然岩が見えます。山の上にある天守閣展望台高森からは木曽川が一望できます。」 Indeed it does! The climb up to the observatory left me gasping for breath, but the stunning views that awaited me made it worth the effort. その通りです！展望台まで上がったところ息を切らして息を呑んでいましたが、私を待っていた素晴らしい景色は努力に値するものでした。
We finally made it to our hotel for the night, a little weary from our travels, but full of stories from the day. 夕方に、少し疲れた状態で、その日に宿泊するホテルに着きました。しかし、その日で見た物で頭が一杯でした。とても万足した一日でした。We were impressed not only by the beautiful scenery but by the hospitality of people in the area. 私たちは美しい景色だけでなく、その地域の人々のもてなしにも感銘を受けました。From the clerk at the information centre to the volunteers at Naegi castle who were excited to share their history with us, everyone seemed eager to welcome us to the area and to make our visit a fun one. 観光案内所の店員さんから、私たちと歴史を分かち合うことによろこんでいた苗木城のボランティアたちまで、誰もが私たちをその地域に歓迎し、私たちの旅行を楽しいものにしようと一生懸命にしていました。We went to bed tired, but excited to see where the next day would take us. 疲れましたが、翌日を楽しみにして寝ました。
