Day 2 of our trip and we were up bright and early. We had a quick breakfast and were out of the hotel before 9AM. 旅行の2日目、早く起きて、簡単な朝食をとり、そして午前９時前にホテルから出発しました。We planned to visit Magome and Tsumago. その日に、馬籠と妻籠を訪問する予定にしていました。 “Magome and Tsumago are two restored and preserved Edo-period way stations on the Nakasendo highway in the Kiso Valley. The valley straddles two prefectures, with Magome in Gifu Prefecture and Tsumago in Nagano Prefecture”(Japan visitor site). 馬籠宿と妻籠宿は木曽渓谷の中山道にある、修復され保存されている江戸時代の2つの道の駅です。岐阜県の馬籠と長野県の妻籠の2つの県にまたがっています。
It is possible to hike along the old road between the two towns in about 2 to 2 and a half hours, and is indeed a very popular walking route, especially amongst foreign visitors. However, we chose to make the journey by car, stopping along the way to admire the beautiful scenic views. 2〜2時間半で2つの町の間の古い道路に沿ってハイキングすることは可能であり、実際には特に外国人観光客の間で非常に人気のある散歩道です。しかし、私たちは車で旅をすることにしました。美しい景色を眺めるために何回か途中で立ち止まりました。
Because we arrived early, we had no problem parking up in Magome. With it being Golden Week, we had fully expected to be met by the sight of crowds of tourists, but, early in the morning, it was pleasantly quiet. 早く着いたので、馬籠に駐車スペースをすぐに見つけました。ゴールデンウィークであるので、私たちは観光客の群衆の光景に会うことを十分に期待していましたが、、早朝に、愉快に静かでした。We leisurely walked up the hill towards an observation point, admiring the carefully reconstructed buildings that line the path on either side of the path. ゆっくりと展望台に向かって丘を上って行き、道の両側にある道に沿って並ぶ美しい再建された建物を眺めました。We discovered an amazing rock garden, found photogenic scenes on every corner and took in the majestic view of the surrounding mountains, the summits of which were hidden by low cloud. The feeling of the early morning mist on our faces was very satisfyingly refreshing. 素晴らしい石庭を発見し、隅々に写真スポットを見つけ、そして周囲の山々の雄大な眺めを楽しんだ。山の頂上は低い雲に隠れていて、私たちの顔は霧で覆われていました。とても爽やかな感じでした。
On the way back down the hill, we stopped off for a coffee at a retro-style café and then made our way back to the car for the next part of our tour. 丘を降りる途中で、私たちはレトロスタイルのカフェでコーヒーを飲みに行き、そして次に妻籠へ向かうために車に戻りました。
One day, I would love to go back and hike along the old path from Magome to Tsumago. We did however, equally enjoy the drive around the narrow country lanes on the way to our next stop. いつかに、私は馬籠から妻籠までの古い道をハイキングしたいと思います。しかし、今回は、次の目的地に向かう途中で狭い田舎道を走るのを十分に楽しんだ。We parked up at a section of the path where we saw signs warning hikers about bears! 遊歩道の近くで、クマについてハイカーに警告する看板を見つけました！
A little further down the road, we then took a small detour to visit the Odaki-Medaki falls: literally the Mr and Mrs of waterfalls, hidden down in the valley amongst the trees. 道を少し先に進むと、男滝・女滝 (オダキ メダキ) を訪れるために立ち寄りました。木々の間で谷間に隠れている、中山道の近くにある2つの滝です。男滝の方は幅が広くなだらかな流れで、女滝は細く急な流れであるのが特徴だそうです。We chatted to an Australian couple who were hiking their way along the Nakasendo and bumped into some more foreign visitors who were enjoying a picnic of strawberries at the foot of the falls. 中山道沿いをハイキングしていたオーストラリア人カップルとおしゃべりしましたし、滝のふもとにいちごのピクニックを楽しんでいた外国人観光客にも会いました。
Finally, just before lunchtime, we arrived at our second destination for the day: Tsumago. ついに、ランチタイムの直前に、その日の私たちの2番目の目的地「妻籠」に到着しました。By this time, the tourist were out in force, but, thanks to the ample parking facilities, we easily managed to find a space to park up. お昼前だったのでたくさんの観光客がいましたが、十分な駐車施設があるため、たやすく駐車スペースを見つけることができました。Armed with a map of the town that was automatically handed out with the parking ticket, we set off to look for something to eat. 駐車券と一緒に配られた町の地図を持って、昼食を食べるレストランを探すために出発した。
Whereas the path through Magome took us uphill, the original route through Tsumago takes you on a flat road along the side of the base of the mountain, just slightly elevated above the Kiso River. 馬籠を通る道は上り坂だったが、妻籠を通る道は木曽川の少し上の山のふもとの側に沿って平らな道であります。
We lunched on a set menu of cold soba noodles served with the local speciality: ‘gohei’, a soft rice cake cooked on a skewer and coated with a moreish sweet and salty walnut paste. お昼に、地元の名物の「五平餅」とざるそばのセットメニューを頂きました。「五平餅」は串で調理され、より甘い甘味と塩味のクルミのペーストでコーティングされた柔らかい餅です。We then took a leisurely stroll around the carefully preserved village, the 42nd post town on the Nakasendo. それから我々は慎重に保存された村、中山堂の42番目のポストタウンを散策しました。We were particularly impressed by the obvious, very collective effort that had gone into making Tsumago a wonderful place for visitors. 妻籠を訪問する観光客にとって素晴らしい場所にするために行った共同の努力に特に感銘を受けました。Most of the stores were decorated outside with fresh flowers and staff were friendly and obliging. 店のほとんどは新鮮な花で外を飾られていて、定員さんはフレンドリーで親切でした。
Our best find was the old elementary school high up on the hill above the main path. 私たちのお気に入りの場所は、メインパスの上の丘の上にある元小学校でした。Although it is noted on the map, there is no particular information available about its history. 地図上に記されていますが、その歴史についての特定の情報はありません。My guess is that it is not especially old, but had been designed to fit in with ‘mood’ of the town. 私はそれが特に古いものではないが、町の雰囲気に合うように設計されていたと思います。 No longer in use, with its broken windows and moss-covered statues guarding the old entrance, it appealed to us just as much as the beautifully preserved buildings on the path down below. 割れた窓や茂みに覆われた彫像が入り口を守り、もはや使われていません。しかし、それは私たちに、下の道にある美しく保存された建物と同じくらい魅力的でした。
Late in the afternoon, after one more coffee and snack break, and with hundreds of new photos on our phones and cameras, we headed back to the hotel for a much-needed nap. 午後遅くに、コーヒーとおやつを食べて、携帯電話に何百もの新しい写真を保存したまま、ホテルに戻って昼寝をしました。
