On location in the UK: Bradford (July 2019)

Every year, I make the journey home to the UK twice: to catch up with family and friends, to refresh my English language skills and to explore and report back on British culture, life and places of interest. ホワイトローズは毎年、英国への旅を2回行います。家族や友達と付き合い、英語のスキルをリフレッシュし、英国の文化、生活、興味のある場所について探求し、このページを通して報告することにしています。 On this trip I was accompanied by my husband as we were both planning to attend our daughter’s university graduation. 娘の大学卒業式に出席することを計画していたので、この旅行で私は夫と同行しました。It gave my trip a whole new perspective: what would a Japanese visitor be interested in seeing and what would he or she want to eat. それは今回の旅行に全く新しい視点を与えました：日本人ならどのことに興味を持っているのか？そして、何を食べたいのか。In our series of blogs this time, we’re going to be answering those questions and more. 今回の一連のブログでは、これらの質問などに答えるようにしたいと思います。

The first of our trips was to the city of Bradford in West Yorkshire. We were renting a house in Huddersfield near to our daughter’s university (which features in an earlier blog here…check out our On Location in the UK page). Bradford is about 40 minutes by train from Huddersfield. 私たちの最初の行き先はウェストヨークシャーのブラッドフォード市でした。娘の大学の近くにあるハダースフィールドの家を借りていました（ハダースフィールド大学は以前のブログで紹介されています。読むには、「イギリス・オン・ロケーション」のページをご覧ください）。ブラッドフォードはハダースフィールドから電車で約40分です。

The first thing that you notice when making your way through the city centre, is the splendor of the city hall, a 19^th century listed building situated on the edge of Centenary Square. In the sunshine, we stopped to admire the architecture and take a few photographs. 町の中心部を通り抜けるときに気づく最初の建物は市庁舎です。100周年記念広場の端に位置する19世紀に建てられたとても素晴らしい建物です。日差しの中で、私たちは建築を賞賛し、いくつかの写真を撮るために少し足を止めました。

We had, however, two goals for the day: to visit the National Science and Media museum and to see the musical, Les Miserables at the Alhambra theatre. しかし、その日の目標は2つありました。国立科学メディア博物館を訪れることと、アルハンブラ劇場でミュージカルのレ・ミゼラブルを見ることでした。Both were just a short walk up the hill from the city hall. The Alhambra theatre has also featured in one of my early blogs, but this was my first visit to the National Science and Media museum. どちらの場所も市庁舎から丘を少し歩いたところです。アルハンブラ劇場は以前のブログに掲載されていましたが、今回が私の初めての国立科学メディア博物館への訪問でした。

I’m going to include a few links to go to for more detailed information, but let me just say that the museum is a perfect destination for camera lovers. もっと詳細な情報を提供するためにいくつかのリンクを紹介するつもりですが、この博物館はカメラが大好きな方にとって最適な目的地であると言っておきましょう。 The Kodak exhibition in the basement homes a fine collection of old cameras and takes you on a journey through the history of modern photography. 地下のコダック展覧会では古いカメラのすばらしいコレクションが展示されています。この展覧会を通して現代写真の歴史を楽しく学べます。 On upper floors, there are interactive science exhibits, a fine collection of old computer games that you can play on, and cases that house replicas of puppets used in famous TV programmes. 上層階には、インタラクティブな科学展示、遊ぶことができる昔のコンピューターゲームのコレクション、そして有名なテレビ番組で使用される人形の複製が様々なケースに展示されています。 The museum is also home to an IMAX cinema. Entrance is free, with the exception of cinema screens and it is one of the most visited museums in the north of England. 博物館にはIMAXシネマもあります。映画館のスクリーンを除き、博物館の入場は無料です。イングランド北部で最も人気のある博物館の1つです。I had fun seeing old characters from TV that reminded me of my childhood. Our daughter enjoyed trying out some of the retro games. And my husband, a keen photographer, was not disappointed by the camera exhibition. 私は自分の子供時代によく見ていたテレビキャラクターの人形等と再会できて、とても嬉しかったです。娘はレトロなゲームのいくつかを試すのを楽しんだ。そして、カメラや写真が大好きな夫は、カメラ展に大満足しました。

After our visits to the museum and to the theatre, we ended the day with a spot of shopping in The Broadway shopping centre. We followed that up with dinner at one of Bradford’s many amazing Indian restaurants….but I’ll be talking more about that in a later blog. 博物館や劇場を楽しんだ後、ブロードウェイのショッピングセンターで買い物して、一日を終えました。そして、帰りの電車に乗る前に、ブラッドフォードの多くの素晴らしいインド料理レストランの一つで夕食をとりました。。。次回のブログで、それについて詳しく紹介するつもりです。
