On Location in the UK: Birmingham, July 2019

In July, it was exactly 30 years since I graduated from university. In 1985, I left home at the age of 18 to study French and International business at Aston University, which is situated on the edge of Birmingham city centre. As the anniversary coincided with our trip over to the UK, my friends suggested that we all meet up and take a trip down memory lane. 7月に大学を卒業してからちょうど30年になりました。 1985年、私は18歳で家を出て、フランス語と国際ビジネスを勉強するためにバーミンガム市内中心部にあるアストン大学に入学しました。卒業の30年記念日は英国への旅行と一致したので、同級生たちは私たち全員がバーミンガムで会って、過去を思い出す旅行をすることを提案しました。

Birmingham is situated in the West Midlands area of England and is frequently referred to as both England and the United Kingdom’s “second city”. In recent years, many parts of Birmingham have been transformed, with the redevelopment of the Bullring Shopping Centre and regeneration of old industrial areas. Old streets, buildings and canals have been restored and the city centre has been modernized in the 30 years since we left. We were all eager to explore the present day version of the city we all ‘grew up’ in. バーミンガムは、イングランドのウェストミッドランズエリアにあり、イングランドとイギリスの「第2の都市」の両方とも呼ばれます。近年、バーミンガムの多くの部分が変化しました。有名なブルリングショッピングセンターは再開発され、多くの古い工業地帯が再生されました。古い通り、建物、運河が復元され、市内中心部は私たちが去ってから30年で近代化されました。私たちは皆、「大人になった」場所の現在のバージョンを探求したかったのです。

Aston University has itself undergone major changes since we graduated and the tower-block apartments that we called home for our time there have been demolished and replaced by more modern buildings. There is also a hotel on the campus now and we made that our base for the weekend. アストン大学自体は卒業してから大きな変化を遂げており、当時私たちが住んでいた高層アパートは取り壊され、より近代的な建物に置き換えられました。キャンパス内にホテルもあり、皆はあそこで宿泊するように予約を取っていました。

After a pub lunch and an exploration of the much-changed campus, we headed into the city centre for early evening drinks and dinner. A ten-minute walk took us into the heart of the city. We walked past the old Police station, the Cathedral and the city hall and reminisced about seeing concerts there of the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra which was then conducted by the up and coming (and now world famous) Simon Rattle. These days, Birmingham has a new symphony hall and concerts are no longer held at the city hall. In fact, everywhere we went, there were signs of change and even more new buildings to come. パブでの昼食と、大きく変わったキャンパスの探索の後、私たちは夕方の飲み物と夕食のために市内中心部に向かいました。キャンパスから１０分間歩くと、街の中心にたどり着きました。私たちは古い警察署、大聖堂、市庁舎を通り過ぎ、あそこでバーミンガム交響楽団のコンサートを見たことを思い出しました。そのとき、オーケストラは新進気鋭の（そして今や世界的に有名な）サイモン・ラトル先生によって指揮されました。最近、バーミンガムには新しいシンフォニーホールがあり、市庁舎ではコンサートは開催されなくなりました。実際、私たちがどこへ見ても、変化の兆候と、さらに建設されている建物が発見しました。

We managed to find seats in a small bar right by the side of the canal in the Gas Street Basin area. 30 years ago, we couldn’t have imagined coming down to this area of canals and old warehouses. However, during the 1990s much of the area around the basin was redeveloped and older buildings refurbished. It is now a thriving area filled with bars and restaurants and on a Saturday night, it was crowded with people enjoying the early evening sunshine. After enjoying a cool drink, we walked through the historic Bull Ring – site of a market for more than 800 years – pausing to take a picture near ‘the bull’ before heading off for a dinner of Spanish Tapas at a quirky little place in Digbeth called Rico Libre. The area around the restaurant was a little off-putting, but the food and the service at the restaurant were absolutely top-notch and I would highly recommend a visit there. 冷たい飲み物を頂いた後、800年以上にわたって市場のある歴史的な「ブルリング」ショッピングセンターを歩きました。雄牛の像の近く皆で写真を撮るために一時停止しました。それから、私たちはスペインのタパスの夕食のためにディグベス地区にあるリコ・リブレと呼ばれる風変わりな小さなレストランに向かいました。正直に言うと、レストラン周辺のエリアは少し怪しかったですが、レストランでの食事とサービスは絶対に一流でしたので、ぜひおすすめします。

After a fantastic day, a little too much wine and a good night’s sleep, we all parted ways the next day. A lot changes in 30 years. We all looked a little different….we were all a little older and wiser…but deep down, we were still the friends of 30 years ago. The city of Birmingham also looks very different on the outside from the place that we remembered, but at its heart, it is still a great city of cultural and industrial diversity. Maybe on a next visit, we’ll actually stop talking long enough to appreciate it…or then again, maybe not! 素晴らしい一日を過ごし、ワインを少し飲み過ぎて、大学のホテルでよく寝てから、翌日皆は一人ひとりの家といつもの生活に戻りました。 30年で大きく変わります。私たちは皆少し違って見えました…私たちは皆少し年を取り、少し賢くなっていました…しかし、心の中では、私たちはまだ30年前の友達のままでした。バーミンガムの街は、私たちが覚えていた場所とは外観が大きく異なりますが、その中心は、文化と産業の多様性の素晴らしい街です。次回の訪問では、話をせずに時間をかけて街をもっと楽しむかもしれません。。。いや、きっと今回と同じだろう。。
