Due to popular demand, we are adding an extra class for our Elementary School (upper grade) students. Classes will begin in May, on Wednesdays, from 4:30PM.

4月26日（水曜日）の4時30分より無料体験レッスンを行います。参加人数は4名までとさせて頂きます。お早めに申し込んでください。

Well, I can’t quite believe how long it’s been since I sat down to write something on here.本当に、本当にお久しぶりです。 In the run-up to the new school year, things have been a little crazy for this one-woman show, but it’s all good. 新学期の準備で一人でバタバタしていましたけど、楽しく仕事をさせて頂きました。笑。Yesterday, April 1st, saw in the start of a brand new, exciting year. 昨日、4月1日、わくわくしながら新年度の初レッスンを向かいました。The schedules are fixed, new classes formed and my birthday board is up!　スケジュールも出来上がり、新しいグループも成立され、誕生日ボードまで無事に仕上げました。 Now, I can sit down and look forward to another year of adventure and a week of first birthday celebrations. これからの一年間本当に楽しみにしています。そして、この一週間の間、生徒さんと一緒にスクールの1周年を祝いたいと思っています。

Happy Saint David’s Day!

This week, at White Rose, we are enjoying some culture. In both children’s and adult lessons, we have been talking about Saint David’s Day which is celebrated every year on March 1st in Wales.今週、ホワイトローズでウェールズの文化を楽しんでいます。子ども・大人のレッスンで聖デイヴィッドのお話をしています。3月1日はセント・デイヴィッズ・デイと呼ばれてウェールズの祝日となっております。
Wales is one of the four countries that form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Situated in the South West of the island of Great Britain,it is bordered by England to the east, the Irish Sea to the north and west, and the Bristol channel to the south. ウェールズは、グレートブリテンおよび北アイルランド連合王国（イギリス）を構成する4つの「国（イギリスのカントリー）」のひとつである。ウェールズはグレートブリテン島の南西に位置し、南にブリストル海峡、東にイングランド、西と北にはアイリッシュ海が存在する。
Saint David is the Patron Saint of Wales. Every year, on March 1st, parades and special events take place all over Wales to celebrate the day. Some people wear traditional Welsh costumes, while others pin a leek or daffodil (both traditional symbols of Wales) to their clothes.
聖デイヴィッドは、ウェールズの聖職者・ウェールズの守護聖人である。毎年の3月1日にパレードや様々なイベントが行われるそうです。伝統的なウェールズの服装をする人もいますし、自国のシンボルとして愛されている「leek:西洋ネギ」や「daffodil:スイセン」を胸に飾る人もいます。
In honour of the day, I decorated our children’s classroom with Welsh-themed banners and buntings and, for our Afternoon Tea lessons, made some rather delicious Welsh cakes.
ホワイトローズではセント・デイヴィッズ・デイの記念に、子どもの教室をウェールズをテーマにした旗などで飾り、アフタヌーンティーレッスンのためにウェルシュケーキを作って見ました。
Learning about different cultures can be fun for both teacher and student! 今週のレッスンは楽しかったです。私も勉強になりました。

Wales lesson

昨日はきれいな青空が広がって、ぽかぽかした気持ち良い天気でしたね。Yesterday, the skies were blue and the weather was wonderfully warm. 私は堺市にある教室に行く前に、チラシをポースティングしながら百舌鳥駅の近くを散歩しました。Before heading off to my classroom in Sakai, I left Mozu station and posted fliers as I took a walk around the neighbourhood. 迷子になりながら一時間半程歩いたところで、お腹が空いてきたので、公園近くのレストランに入って、一人でランチを頂きました。 I got lost several times in the maze of narrow streets and after about an hour and a half, realized I was feeling rather peckish and went into a restaurant near the park for lunch. そのランチは￥1,000のカレーセットでした。I opted for the ￥1,000 curry set.大型ファミリーレストランと比べると少し高い？Maybe just a little more expensive than at the cheap and cheerful family restaurants.高級レストランよりだいぶ安い？But nowhere near the prices charged by the fancier eating houses. しかし、定番なメニューでありながら、深みのある大人の風味に仕上がった、とても美味しいカレーでした。However, although curry is a common choice on the menu in most restaurants over here, this particular one was full of hidden flavour.その上、細かいところにその店の丁寧さが見えました。What’s more, the restaurant’s sense of service was reflected in lots of special little ways.カラフルな野菜をご飯の上に載せたり、福神漬けの変わりにピクルス、仕上げに温泉卵のフライ、と言ったように「どこにでもあるメニューだけど、うちのカレーはちょっと違うよ！」とまるでアピールしているように私には見えました。Vegetables, laid on top of the rice, created a vibrant splash of colour. Instead of the usual manufactured red pickles, there was a side dish of freshly pickled cabbage. On top of it all, a deep-fried soft-boiled egg took pride of place. It was as if, through this whole presentation, the restaurant was clearly letting us know that what they provided might be available in other places but that their version of it was slightly different to anywhere else. そう考えると、自分の仕事に対しての思いと完璧に重なっていますね！As I realized this, I recognized huge similarities to the way I approach my own work, teaching English. 私はこれからも他では経験できないような、少し違った、心のこもったレッスンを提供できるように頑張りたいと思います。It takes time and energy but I am determined to continue to provide a service that my students wouldn’t be able experience anywhere else: a lesson that’s just that little bit different, a lesson that has been prepared with care.

Yesterday, on my day off, I spent time with my lovely friend Jacqui, @jacquimiyabayashiconsulting who is a fellow expat, business owner and all-round marketing maestro. 昨日定休日だったので、私と同じく外国人、個人事業の経営者のお友達とランチを食べに行きました。For lunch we had what is aptly named as the ‘treasure chest’ lunch, which contains a perfect blend of East and West: food from entirely different cultures working nicely together to form a whole. ランチにこのとても素敵な‛玉手箱’セットを頂きました。そのメニューは東と西の食文化をとても上手にブレンドしたものです。
My primary work here at White Rose is to teach English. ホワイトローズでは、私の主要な仕事は英語を教えることです。For me, it’s all about giving people the tools to become closer together, to enable communication and encourage understanding of other cultures. 生徒さんに必要な‛ツール’を与えることで、コミュニケーションを可能にして、お互いの文化の理解を促すことが私のモチベーションです.I know from my own experiences that when you speak more than one language, the world can become a true treasure chest of wonderful new discoveries. 私はある程度、3つの言語を話すことができます(どれも完璧ではありませんが。。。）自分の経験から言えば、話す言語が多いほど、より多くの発見が待っています。。。この玉手箱のような世界に。 It can also lead to better understanding and acceptance of others. In the present world, I can’t help but think that that can only be a good thing.　最近のニュースを見るとこの世界の様々な文化をお互いに理解するのがなにより望ましい。。。。

Well hello, it’s been quite a while! こんにちは。。。アンドお久しぶりです。 Many apologies for taking two weeks to kick off my jet-lag and post-holiday blues and get back to baking business. 本当に申し訳ありません。イギリスから日本へ帰って来て、時差ボケそして”休み後のブルース”に二週間悩まされましたが、等々元気になり、今週から新しいケーキ作りに挑戦しました。I’m going to keep this blog sweet and simple, just last this week’s cake.今日のブログをこのバナナとはちみつケーキと同様に甘くて、シンプルにさせて頂きます。 Bananas? バナナ？Honey? はちみつ？Surely it’s healthy?　きっと体に良いでしょう？ Who doesn’t love a traybake that you can share with your friends. お友達の皆さまと分け合えるにはこのようなケーキは抜群ですね。Enjoy with or without a dollop of cream…but always with a good cup of tea. クリームがなくても良いですが、必ず美味しい紅茶と召し上がりましょう。This week we sampled a very nice Irish Breakfast blend from T2. 今週のアフタヌーンティーレッスンでは、上品なアイリッシュブレクファストブレンドと共に頂きました。

Yesterday, at work, I had three wonderful reasons to be thankful.
昨日仕事で涙が出るほどの幸せを感じました。
At the beginning of every lesson, I always ask my students: ‘What’s new with you?’ The three ladies that attended my Afternoon Tea lesson yesterday afternoon all had something special to tell me. いつも、レッスンの始めに、生徒の皆さまに　‛最近、どう？’　と聞きます。昨日のアフタヌーンティーレッスンに参加してくれた3名はこう答えてくれました。
The first lady told me that she had finally raised the courage to speak to a stranger in English. Remembering the phrase that I taught her: ‘I hope that you don’t mind me asking but…..’ she was able to start up a conversation with a visitor from China without being abrupt or intrusive.
一人目の生徒さんは大阪市内へ行ったとき、やっと勇気を出して、海外がら来ていた観光客に声をかけることが出来ました。レッスンで覚えたフレーズ　‛I hope that you don’t mind me asking’　(失礼ですが。。。）、突然過ぎではなく、出しゃばり過ぎではなく、英語で自然に口火を切ることが出来ました。本当に嬉しそうに報告してくれました。
The second lady told me that, much to the delight of her family, she had decided to set herself the challenge of baking from one of my recipes every day for a week.
2人目の生徒さんはレッスンで頂いたレシピカードを引っ張り出し、毎日違うイギリスのお菓子作りに挑戦しました。家族の皆さまはとても喜んでくれたそうです。
The third lady waited until the end of the lesson to spring her ‘surprise news’ on me. She had baked this beautiful Christmas bread for all of the members of the class.
3人目の生徒さんはレッスンの終わる頃にこのとても素敵な手作りクリスマスブレッドをクラスの皆さまに手渡しました。本当に嬉しいサプライズでした。
I am so thankful that every day I get the chance to work with such warm-hearted people.
心温まる。感謝の気持ちを表す適当な言葉が思い浮かびません。この仕事ができて、本当に幸せです。　

Here at White Rose, we are on the official approach to Christmas: lessons, baking and all! December’s first recipe is a favourite of mine and always popular with the students: gingerbread men. Golden syrup is a staple ingredient of many British cakes and biscuits. It can be a little hard to find in Japan, but I usually manage to buy it online. Happy baking everyone!
